Pio
Abad
Pio Abad is a Manila-born artist who graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in 2012. His degree show centred around Imelda Marcos, the notorious first lady of the Philippines. Marcos claimed that an Indian mystic once told her that she was the reincarnation of Semiramis, the Assyrian queen who became ruler of the vast Neo-Assyrian empire following the death of her husband, Shamshi-Adad V. A painting was commissioned to commemorate this revelation but mistakenly depicted Semiramis as the Egyptian queen Nefertiti. This silk scarf, which was included in Abad’s degree show, portrays Marcos as Semiramis, surrounded by Filipino artefacts and objects that mistakenly refer to Ancient Egypt instead of Assyria. Pio Abad was nominated for the 2012 Dazed Converse Emerging Artist Award.
