Barry Reigate’s riotous canvases are pop porn at its best. The work takes its cues from both the overloaded world of consumer culture and the equally crowded landscape of post-war Modern and contemporary art. Presenting the macho fetishism of painting with a humorous twist, Reigate embraces the abjection of Philip Guston, George Condo, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Reigate’s expressive paintings are executed with squiggly brush marks, smears, spray paint, and the occasional foot print, ensuring the viewer knows every inch of his canvas has been thoroughly man-handled. The artist was born in London where he currently lives and works.
