Duncan Marquiss
|
b.1979 in Scotland Duncan Marquiss lives and works in London, and represented the Scottish Pavillion at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003. Marquiss makes drawings, paintings and films which are beautiful but have a darker subtext. He often refers to an iconography of the lycanthrope, the symbolic transformation of man into animal and through it the becoming or return to a base and sublime state of raw drives and concerns. He explores notions of a not quite humanised nature, drawing upon the cultural history of the uncanny and the failure to articulate it. The works possess similarities to the imagery of old folk tales as well as classic artistic themes.
