Vicky Wright
Guardian XLI
Medium: Oil on panel
Year made: 2010
Vicky Wright makes abstract paintings that touch upon politics, portraiture and patronage. Using oil on board, Wright depicts expressive and cryptic images that are influenced by her childhood growing up in a coal mining town of North East England. Wright’s paintings often refer to the underworld existence of miners with its hardship, physical endurance and overall darkness. Her paintings recall the work of several Modernist painters such as Picasso with her use of geometric form, and Francis Bacon with her blurred faces and skewed figures. Wright studied at Goldsmith College, London (2006-2008) and was a winner of the 2008 John Moores Painting Prize.
Location: London
Date acquired: 20 October 2010
