James Nares
Thump
Year made: 2009
b.1953 in London James Nares now lives and works in New York. His works are displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Whitney Museum of American Art amongst others. For Nares painting was about reinventing the surface, paint and brush to make it unique to him. Nares paints horizontally, using a studio “painting rig” to suspend himself above the surface of the canvas. This enables him to recreate his work on a much larger scale and avoids any of the paint dripping. Nares’ paint is very aqueous and the avoidance of drips is crucial to evade any evidence of gravity in his work.
Location: San Francisco
Date acquired: 29 March 2010
