Willie Doherty’s photographs and video installations have been shown extensively in group exhibitions throughout Europe since the early 1980s, and he has twice been nominated for the Turner Prize. Much of Doherty's work has revolved around the troubles in Northern Ireland - such as his series of images of blocked border roads - and the stereotypes of the media coverage. This photograph is characteristic of Doherty’s work, portraying his concern with ideas of the reliability of the image, and with looking beyond the obvious surface.
